Square One
The most recent quartet to take the stage is Square One; comprised entirely
of "first-timers" in quarteting. In fact, three of the four have less than
five years experience in Barbershopping! But don't let that fool you: At
the October 2005 Central States District
competition in Des Moines, they won the
Novice Quartet Championship Trophy and the Super Novice Quartet Award.
You may ask, "How does a quartet come up with a name?" Well, they
originally petitioned the Society
for the name, "VoiceMale", but in a matter
of 14 days that name was already claimed. So the message went out, "Well,
it looks like we're back to square one." Hhhmmm.
While based in Mason City with the River City Chorus, the members come from
all over Northeastern Iowa.
Members are:
Tenor (far right): Tony Poppens, a farmer from
Aplington where he lives with
his wife, Carma.
Lead (2nd from left): Clark Ebert, a first grade teacher from
Riceville, where he makes
his home with his wife, Shary.
Baritone (left): Mark Narveson, A Registered Nurse in the Emergency Room of
Mercy Hospital in
Mason City,
makes his home in Nora Springs, Iowa with his
wife Jeanne. Mark is also the Contact Man for the Quartet (see below).
Bass (2nd from right): Harlan Nyhus, also a farmer from
Forest City, where
he and his wife Deb, THE secretary for the
Forest City Middle School, live
with their children Holden and Heidi.
While new at the game, these guys really like to perform and are available
to entertain your group or function.
